[edit] Change to table
I want to incorporate a sortable table into this article and will work on this for the next few days. -PatPeter 02:13, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- Please don't. Firstly, the format of this page is incompatible with sortable tables. Because of the headers sorting cannot be done correctly. Also, this page was never meant to be left like this. In fact, this manual list is just a temporary list. The whole plan was to autogenerate this list out of the list of series we have documented. With that being the case adding any extra piece of data you wanted would be completely simple. It's actually quite annoying to see people continue editing this page, because it means that it's going to be longer before we have enough articles to replace this list with. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) Sep 23, 2008 @ 14:03 (UTC)
- Sorry about the miscommunication, I forgot that I had primarily edited on this talk page, afterwards I discovered that List of Anime Series ran on a whole separate page. Once and if I finish the table I can work on fixing the headers. What do you mean "manual list", like how users manually made it? So you have a bot ready to generate the same list? I do not see how, as not every listed anime on that page has a page on this Wiki. Wikicode has already made adding any extra code simple, whether a table or bullet points. What do you mean the article would be longer than the replacement list? I will not edit until you reply. -PatPeter 03:50, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- No a bot, internal software. We use semantics here. Basically every series page with an infobox is automatically annotated with special information. And we can query this information to create any sort of lists we want.
- It doesn't matter if adding bullet points or rows is simple, it's duplication of information. Meaning that the same piece of information is located in more than one piece, and because of that when something gets updated, multiple places need to be updated. In practice, most of the people who are updating this information don't know about the multiple places. As a result, one location for the information lags behind the other, this location is normally the manual lists as actual articles get more attention.
- This page is basically a temporary page. Yes, we currently don't have to many articles, but that is being slowly worked on. There is no real restriction on what series we list here, so conceivably as the wiki grew there's no reason that the pages used to document series could not be used to generate the list of series.
- The annoyance in people adding more stuff to this list, is that very point. The end goal is to document every series we can, however if new items keep being added to this list, then it takes longer before the number of articles we have gets up to a point where it actually matches the manual list enough to switch it with the desired automatic list.
- Honestly, rather than updating this, I'd be more compelled to switch it with an automatic list now even though the list is smaller. It would be less information, but the fact that the list itself is tied to what we have documented would be incentive for people to actually document series to make them show up.
- Our goal is to document series, not create some long list of them. There are hundreds of anime lists out there, but no wiki which document entire series in true depth, other than various scattered ones which sometimes are hard to track down. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) Sep 25, 2008 @ 03:53 (UTC)
- First two margin breaks: Where else could I find this list? I do not phrase this as an argument, but rather wish to know to better understand this list policy.
- Third margin break: Well as long as a series does not have a page it would not have a spot on this list right?
- Fourth margin break: But wouldn't not adding new series as they come up defeat the purpose of the list of anime, and also cause problems later (series not being added)? You do not have to have an automatic list, in fact because the manual list has grown so large, if I can finish the table you would find it a higher convenience just to add new series as they come up, only takes | | | |- so far.
- Fifth and last margin breaks: Of course not, no wiki only has one page. The table aims to allow users to search for anime easier, for instance if they know the time period it came up in they can sort and search year to find it, so on so forth. Let me finish the table, then we can decide what to do with it. Of course, I could always use your help. -PatPeter 05:28, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- anidb, animenfo, ann, zomganime's, animated-divots, myanimelist, and so on... there are dozens of sites that already provide comprehensive lists, and even give search facilities. That is not the goal of this wiki.
- Lists can be generated and formatted with the #ask parser function. Wikia was having some bugs earlier so I couldn't add the needed semantic attribute to the template. It takes a bit of template tweaking and letting the job que to work, but take a look at w:c:yugioh:List of "Gadget" monsters, I helped the Yu-Gi-Oh! Wiki get SMW up and running, and they are using it quite effectively.
- And no, manually adding series is not convenient. It's not automatically sorted, when data gets updated on an article it doesn't get updated here. And when we add new series that aren't on this manual list they don't show up. This list is NOT a catch all list of all existing anime. There are hundreds upon hundreds of anime series in existence, and it would be stupid to attempt to create one of our own when other sites already offer better lists with more info. The wiki's purpose is to document series, and these lists are supposed to be lists of series we have documentation on so that people can find them.
- As for your searching. To be honest, if you went around and added release dates to series instead of manually adding them to this list, we could offer something even better than this list. Actual queries. It would be possible for people to use the ask special page to query a list of series made after a certain year. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) Sep 27, 2008 @ 02:24 (UTC)
The table format is ruining the page, and readers are complaining about it. As well, the sorting is utterly screwed up. For now I've moved your table changes to List of Anime Series/alternate list, feel free to keep editing that, if it gets to a good point it could be merged back in easily, but don't get optimistic. I honestly don't think you can fix the sorting issues with that kind of table, as well creating a list is not the point of the wiki. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) Sep 28, 2008 @ 00:57 (UTC)
[edit] missing stuff.
You're missing out on One Piece Movies. All 10 of them.
